Animal Café Humming with Good News

Animal Cafe squarebanner125 By Guest Blogger Mary Haight, Animal Cafe

Animal Café regulars were abuzz with more than coffee in June!  Conversations ranged from dogs helping troubled kids in therapy and teaching leadership in the workplace, to a global effort to invent solutions to animal euthanasia, and, just in time for summer, solutions to your pet travel, relocation, and shelter transport needs with Pet Airways.

Eric Goebelbecker brought in Dr. Rise Van Fleet to describe her Pet Play Therapy program for troubled children . The human-animal bond encourages open communication, and so often abused children are not readily willing to trust adults. The program is also designed to engage animals’ minds so they enjoy the work, too – a fascinating discussion with the award-winning psychologist, founder of the International Collaborative on Play Therapy.

Moving across country with your furry friends? Going on an extended vacation with your pet? Perhaps you’re a shelter seeking to transport animals out of state?  Edie Jarolim speaks with Pet Airways’ Aly Tognotti and gives us the high notes on how 50 cats and dogs all fly in a class of their own with staff to Hanging Out at Animal Cafe tend their every need, and the low-down on ground services during layovers and pit-stops on long hauls.

Mary Haight spoke with Found Animals Executive Director, Amy Gilbreath, regarding their Michelson Grant, funding global research to stem worldwide euthanasia of animals. Amazing work! With $75 million available, human doctors are joining the race to find the “holy grail” of sterilization – a single dose solution for cats and dogs.  International Symposia see attendance by representatives from more than 25 countries.

Did you hear about the dog who teaches leadership and motivation skills in the workplace? Dr Lorie Huston spoke to author and public speaker Tracey Jones about her hound Mr. Blue who offers bits of wisdom like “Take a long deep drink from the water bowl of reality – herding is not leading!”  Workplace skills, it seems, are one more thing dogs teach us.  Are you as good a leader as Mr Blue? Have a quick listen to the podcast!

  1. I heard about Pet Airways but don’t know much about them. I moved across the U.S. with my two cats and it was stressful for all of us. I’m not sure about allowing them to fly alone without me. It would be like allowing children to fly by themselves. I’ll have to research Pet Airways.

  2. I’d be interested in hearing. The TOS seems rather clear that it is not unless expressly approved by Amazon. I guess if the library got it in writing then they would be ok.
