Pet Social Media Strategies For 2013

Guest post by Blog Manager Robbi Hess

Picture1We've spoken so much about blogging as a way to grow your pet reach, but how often are you integrating social media into your strategies? Do you think that perhaps 2013 is the time to jump start your social media efforts? Perhaps you're involved in social media but need a way to amp it up or refresh your profiles or status updates. Here are some steps you can take now to be a social media superstar by years' (or even sooner!) end!

What do you hope to achieve with your social media efforts? If you don't have a strategy or a roadmap, how will you know when you've arrived? Do you want to up your numbers of followers? Post social media updates more frequently? Become known as an expert in your particular pet field? Write it down then chart a course toward achieving it. For example if you want to garner 1,200 more followers by year's end, divide the number by the number of months in the year, then by the weeks in the month, etc. and you will come up with a goal to meet.

How current are your social media profiles? When is the last time you reviewed your social media profile? Does it accurately reflect who you are and what you do in the pet realm? Are you using action verbs? How searchable are your profile "headlines"? Now is the time to give them a review and change them if necessary.

Increase your productivity! Let's face it, as with anything you do, you get out of it what you put into it, right? If you're not posting on social media and you're not actively engaged in conversations, you won't grow you reach and people will have no reason to follow you. Look up productivity tools to enhance the amount of time you're on social media and how often your posts show up in your followers news feeds. Set aside a specific amount of time for which to work on your social media strategies and results will surely follow.

What do you hope to accomplish with social media this year?

  1. We’re trying to keep it fun. We enjoy Facebook and the added engagement and interaction it creates with our blog. We TRY to love Twitter….but I’m just not a 140 character kind of cat and we don’t feel the same sense of community we do with the blog and with Facebook. We won’t completely ignore it, but want to put energy into what we love. : )
So we’ll be focusing primarily on our blog, Facebook and Glogirly Design.

  2. I’m with Katie! I don’t feel the same sense of community with Twitter, but part of the reason is that I don’t involve myself as much compared to my blog, Facebook, and YouTube. This year I’m going to put a better effort towards Twitter. We’ll see how it goes.

  3. I agree with your Twitter comments. I am there but not truly “there.” It doesn’t feel like a community of friends there like I have on FB, LI and G+. It feels like drive my community!

  4. It‘s good to know that a lot of industries are now accepting the concept of social media. With social media, you can accomplish a lot of things, especially in promoting your pet brands and sharing something about pet to your audience. Maybe you can include widening your reach and making sharing fun!

  5. Indeed, Staci. Social media is a good platform to promote your business online. Why not? Almost everybody has their own social media account. Surely, your target market is among them. Your only dilemma when you want to use this platform is how to stand out amidst the number of businesses online. Writing good and shareable content and making your profile as interactive as possible can be your way to capture your audiences’ attention.

  6. “What do you hope to achieve with your social media efforts?” – That is a very good question! To have a clear vision for your social media marketing, it is best to address first what do you want to attain in using social media. With a clear goal, you will know exactly how to plan your campaigns without losing your track.

  7. Thanks Robbi, for reminding us bloggers about the increased role of social media. For me, it’s about extending my reach and message as a cat expert and advocate. I love connecting with other cat lovers all over the world and would like to grow both our FB and Twitter numbers. As our readership has grown, I miss the intimacy of commenting at other blogs. Sadly, there isn’t time to blog hop the way we used to.
