Light a Candle on September 26: Raise Awareness About Homeless Animals
Pet lovers, animal welfare organizations, The Mayor's Alliance of NYC's Animals and Helen Woodward Animal Center have designated Thursday, September 26 as the first annual Remember Me Thursday.
The goal is for this movement to be international and call attention to "the millions of pets who lose their lives each year because they cannot find loving homes."
The goal of Remember Me Thursday is that millions of people, across the globe, will light both real and virtual candles as a way to "shine a light on the pets awaiting adoption."
How can you get involved? Here are tips offered in a press release from the Mayor's Alliance of NYC's Animals:
- Light a virtual candle Thursday at www.RememberMeThursday.org
- Organize a candle-lighting ceremony for your local pet shelter (for information go to www.RememberMeThursday.org)
- Use your social media platforms to spread the word about Remember Me Thursday. Use the hashtag #LightForPets
- The biggest way you can help — year round — is to choose to adopt rescue or shelter animals rather than
purchasing pet store animals, and encouraging friends and family to do the same.
Jane
Hoffman, President and Chair of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, said,
“The Alliance is proud to support Remember Me Thursday to raise
awareness about the importance of adopting rescue animals.”
Celebrities that will be using the power of their social media voices to shine a light on Remember
Me Thursday are Kristin Chenoweth, Ellen DeGeneres, Kristen Bell,
Katherine Heigl, Margaret Cho, Kathy Ireland, and many others.
About: The
Remember Me Thursday global awareness campaign is championed by Mike
Arms, President of the Helen Woodward Animal Center and creator of both the
International Pet Adoptathon and International Home 4 the Holidays program,
which, in partnership with other national animal organizations, has found homes
for 8.3 million pets since 1999.
Our challenge to you! If you light a candle we'd love to see it, and you, and your pet. We'd love to see your photos on our Facebook Be The Change For Pets wall.
