Winn Feline Foundation Cat Writer Award Revealed At BlogPaws
Cats matter. The people who write about cats matter, too. The Winn Feline Foundation Media Appreciation Award was created to thank journalists who support and promote awareness of feline health. In 2014, the very first Winn Feline Foundation Media Appreciation Award was bestowed upon the late Dr. Lorie Huston.
Since 2005, the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award has recognized journalists and editors who publicly support the mission of the Winn Feline Foundation to advance feline health studies and to communicate facts about feline health. Past recipients of the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award have included Steve Dale, Beth Adelman, Pam Johnson-Bennett, Amy Shojai, Kim Thornton, Kari Winters, and Darlene Arden.
This year, BlogPaws was once again privy to watch as Steve Dale, Winn Board Member Steve Dale and esteemed journalist, presented the 2015 Winn Feline Foundation Media Appreciation Award to Fran Pennock Shaw.
Fran Pennock Shaw is an award-winning freelance writer and former newspaper reporter who specializes in covering animal health and research issues. She has published more than 200 companion animal articles in newspapers, magazines and newsletters and has been honored nearly 50 times by the international Cat Writers’ Association Inc., Dog Writers’ Association of America, the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association and various journalism organizations.
Fran is a past president and former treasurer of CWA and remains active in that organization. She is the author of Gotta Love Cats, published by Barron’s Educational Series, and was a contributing writer to Symptom Solver For Dogs And Cats by Rodale Press, and the Adams Media anthology: Cats Do It Better Than People — a philosophy, by the way, that she entirely believes!
“Fran writes about complex veterinary issues, including projects which Winn has funded to benefit feline health – and she is able to easily translate veterinary and science speak into words all cat owners can understand,” Dale said, “Her commitment to supporting feline is palpable. She’s also an excellent journalist who has been writing about cat health issues for a very long time.”
The Winn Feline Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1968 that supports studies to improve cat health. Since 1968, the Winn Feline Foundation has funded over $3 million in health research for cats at more than 30 partner institutions world-wide. This funding is made possible through the support of dedicated donors and partners. Research supported by the Winn Feline Foundation helps veterinarians to improve treatment of common feline health problems and prevent many diseases. Grants are awarded twice yearly with the help of the foundation’s expert review panel. For further information, go to www.winnfelinefoundation.org
